Post by G. John Garrett, C.A.SPost by El GatoYes Eric, I can rent Neumann or Shoeps.
Isn´t the MKH 50 way more directional than the 40?
I read in the group that the 40 is used for sittuations of much action
where an actor may get off axis with a 50, and in that case the 40
would get it.
I think I´m looking for a similar mic with the same pattern.
What would that be?
Thanks in advance!
Go for the Schoeps, you won't be disappointed. Off-axis is off-axis, you
still need to cue the mic to follow the actor. the 40 [IMO] has too wide
a pattern for overhead boom use; the Schoeps sounds great and is
forgiving, for a hypercardioid.
I agree. In case you're not familiar with the differences, John G. is
referring to a Schoeps MK41 capsule which has a hypercardioid pickup
pattern. As Jim mentioned, if you really need a wider pattern, you
could use the MK4 cardioid capsule.
The most common Schoeps rig for film sound is:
* CMC6 (or CMC5) Preamp
(The 6 works on 12v.-48v. phantom,
the 5 only works on 48v. phantom.)
* MK41 Hypercardioid capsule
* CUT1 filter which has a very steep (24dB/octave)
cutoff below 70Hz which will help greatly
with reducing boom handling noise.

As I said, I agree with John G. that the standard setup would serve you
well. The MK41 pickup pattern is wider than the MKH60 but narrow enough
that it works well for film sound. A characteristic that many
especially like about the Schoeps is that its off-axis response is so
smooth, that if someone is a bit to the side, they don't sound off-axis
in sound character, the level is just a bit lower.
Good luck.
