This post is addressed to anyone who uses the 1640 or has a connection to
Mackie. I heard today the Onyx 1640 is being discontinued. Is this true? I
am considering purchasing one and would hate to find out 3 months from now
it is being replaced with something else. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks, Steve Osmon

The 1640 is still up on Mackie's website, and I would assume if they had
introduced new models, they would have been shown at AES several weeks ago.

That's no guarantee, though. I own a 1620 as a backup mixer, and at least
for production sound, I felt the 1640 was too big for the cart. To me, it
had no advantage, save for 4 more mike preamps (which I doubted I would use,
since I'd probably only have to deal with a couple of booms and six wireless,
tops).

If you were dealing with a reality/doco or maybe a complex music production,
then I could see where a 1640 would be preferred, as long as you had the
available space. The preamps and distortion levels on all the Onyx mixers
are really decent, especially for the money.

Take a look at the 1604-VLZ. It seems comparable, and was just
favorably reviewed in Pro Audio Review.
If the 1640 is dis-continued, you may get a good price on it to get
them out the door and Mackie stuff tends to last a good long time.

You sure it was a 1604-VLZ? That analog mixer came out years and years ago.
Mackie released a 1604-VLZ3 last year (I think it was), but it has no
firewire, IIRC...Just straight analog.

I have no knowledge about the fate of the 1640...didn't see (or look for) it
at AES... So who knows.

Sorry.

Indeed, it was the 1604-VLZ3 I was reading about.
