Many of the unique features of the Chinhda cart are available only with the
cart. But there are a number of special brackets, equipment tie-downs, and
other accessories that can function well on any cart. We are pleased to make
these available for use with whatever cart you may have. (And for
substantially less than the cost of the whole cart!)

Chinhda will provide mounting hardware for fastening the device to any
suitable surface. Of course, it may be necessary to drill a few holes in
your shelf or frame and that would be your responsibility.

And when you do assemble the funds to purchase the full Chinhda cart, you
can simply move the brackets over to the new one. Consider it purchasing a
Chinhda cart one piece at a time.

David,

Just out of curiosity, could you provide a little history.....who is
Chinhda? Where is he from and why does he have but one name? Was he a mixer
at one time?

Thanks!

Sure.

He's a very private person so I'll keep my response general.

Chinhda Khommarath got his start in the business (as I understand it)
working for Peter Weibel. About 30 years ago, Peter was the west coast rep
for KEM editing systems and Chinhda was his shop technician. The editing
machine showroom and repair shop was in the same neighborhood as Mike
Denecke's shop. Mike was a bit of a real estate entrepreneur and also rented
space to other motion picture enterprises. Manfred Klemme had his office in
the same area when he was the representative for Sonosax and Stelladat.
(That was much later, of course.)

Eventually, Peter moved on and became a rep for Nagra. Chinhda took over the
editing machine business. In fact, I think that the present shop may be the
same facility that Peter used. Mike and Chinhda became friends and he used
Chinhda, a skilled and inventive machinist, to build prototypes of his
various products. (The production manufacturing is handled by another shop.)
Since Mike continued to take occasional mixing jobs, especially commercials,
he used Chinhda on occasion as a boom operator.

Editing equipment is still Chinhda's main business. He provides KEMS to the
few producer/directors who still prefer to cut on film. (There are a few and
they have the clout to do things their own way.) He also rents Avid systems
and he builds a portable telecine machine that is similar to a flat bed
editor equipped with a camera and electronic strobe instead of a picture
module.

He built his first sound cart for Mike Denecke and Mike continued to use it
throughout his career. Probably the second cart was for Peter Weibel to
showcase the Nagra D at trade shows. He has modified carts for all sorts of
mixers and he builds the cable hooks sold through LSC and Coffey Sound.

He takes tremendous pride in his craft and won't consider any adjustment
that would make the cart easier and cheaper to produce if it compromises
quality in any way. For example, the trays with the perforated metal
platforms are insanely labor intensive to produce. It has been suggested
that he might substitute a tray made from a single piece of folded metal.
Chinhda will not hear of it; he believes that the pleasure of handling the
artfully curved corners is an essential part of the cart. He is content to
continue making the "Ferrari" of sound carts even if he makes (and sells)
only a few units.

While he hardly ever works as a mixer, he did mix a film a few years ago.
The title escapes me right now but I'll post it later.
