AKG MICS ON LOCATION?

I like the Blue Line series a lot, especially the short shotgun capsule.
Makes big rooms sound smaller.

I have a pair of AKG C460s with cardioid caps. I know that Mike Westgate
uses a C460 with CK69 shotgun capsule for all his dialog and loves it.

Speaking of AKG; I was given a D 190 AKG mic. It's cardioid, but
that's about all I know about it. Any comments?

I used my D190 for the first time in several years the other day, still
going well. I used it on a musical piece, for micing a rhodes piano, it used
to be my mic of choice for drums (toms) and on the early electric
piano/organ (Rhodes and B4 etc). A good general purpose Dynamic Cardioid.

Well, it may not be exactly Kosher, but at the time I went freelance,
I owned a pair of black body AKG 451E's, with omni, cardioid, hyper,
and short shotgun caps. Rather than go out and spend a bunch more
money on mics, I decided to make the best of what I had. That was
over three and a half years ago, and while I do own an MKH60 as well
now, most of my indoor stuff and even much of the outdoor is still
done with the AKGs. I like the flexibility of the modular capsules. I
just have to be careful not to crossthread them when changing. I know
they aren't Schoeps, but my clients who care have always seemed to
like them, and I still have not had a producer question them.

AKG changed the diameter and pitch of the threads on the C460B and C480B, making this far less likely with the newer (ULS) system.

Ty,
I also use the AKG Blue Line. They are great mics for indoors. Did a feature
(low budget) using them. Not one complained. In fact, Producer (former sound
mixer) said it is really rich sounding... much like a scheops. (almost like a
scheops) I am very happy with what it picks up.

I boom frequently with a 460 and an hypercardio capsule (which is
actually a CK3 from the 451 days, with an adaptor to fit on the 460)
I like the way it cut thru dialogs, and sometimes find it more
appropriate than a Schoeps with MK41 (God of location sound forgive
me...), although the AKG's noise is higher, of course.

I have a bunch of 451 I bought 20 years ago, two C3000 the first
version -those were hyper AND cardio-, a few others 460 with omnis...
when I think of it, there must be something about that AKG sound that
I like.

AKG 460 B was the first mic I bought (used). I didn't like it, bought
a CK8 short shotgun capsule and an adapter, still didn't like it. Could
be mine was a dud. It also developed a corrosion problem the solder
oxidized, I resoldered the whole thing. (pain in the you know what)

I believe somebody was doing MODS on 460's, new IC.

I bought a couple of Schoeps and probably will flog the AKG on E-Bay one
day.

Yes, I've used AKG mikes for the last 10 years.

I've stuck to C460 head amps as they are transformer coupled
(unlike the later C480 units) and therefore help to combat any
induced hash from lighting cables on the studio floor.

I have also given away the CK69 passive extension tubes as they
give too isolated a sound and I feel the short or basic CK69 gives
a wonderful result with just the right amount of ambience.

I currently have 7 x C460 units 3x Ck69 capsules, 3 x Ck63 capsules
and also 2 x CK5 capsules which are earlier cardiods in metal shields
with rubber suspensions.

I am aware of the upgrades that are possible with the C460 units
and am currently in the process of researching the Op amps, FETS
and transistors that will further improve these great microphones.

I love AKG products and also have 2 x C414ULS studio mikes, as with the
HHB Portadrive coupled to an 8 channel Sonosax offers good prospects
for some enjoyable music recording are in progress.

Regards to all

Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades. $175 for what I think is a marvellous result.

Oh, and I forgot the one I use the most : the 522 (stereo XY)

With it I do FX, atmos, nature sound, foley... on a short boom.
This one as great mileage. Bought in 88. Caps have been changed three times.
Love it.

Sometimes I do two shot dialog with it.

I personally use exclusively AKG 460s and 480s mostly with ck3 (or ck63)
capsules for interiors (I've got quite a number of them with a selection of
other all kinds of capsules). They all have a swivel thingy and I use them
also as plant microphones. My son (sound mixer too) uses exclusively a 460
with a ck69 for exteriors (and a 460/ck63 for interiors). And having
(sound)edited a film where he was sound mixer I'm seriously impressed with
the ck69.

BTW compared to a schoeps/41 the AKGs aren't a bit noisier or less 'sweet'
sounding.....the 480s actually have audibly less noise than the Schoepses -
tested side by side with my golden ears (see also their technical data).

Very happy with them, no complains...except maybe one or twice a year I'm
having a humidity problem which is quickly solved by switching to a
different (same model) mic.

No lavs yet - but eying the ck77....

Though I don't use them as much as I used to...I have 9 or 10 of the AKG
CK-77 lav mics. I used to use them for everything...but now I use them
mainly for "see the mic" network news and magazine work. For everything else
these days I use Countryman B-6's. I have the earlier version of the CK-77's
which are hot as a pistol. The cable is a little thick but they really sound
great.

Whats the difference between the Blue line series and the ULS series mics ?
The Blue Line is a small-diaphragm modular system that includes capsules
in just about every pattern. It's electret, but to my ears about the
best-sounding electrets out there. The acoustic design is similar to the
classic C451/C460/C480 series (which was externally polarized), but unlike
those mics, it has an easy to use bayonet instead of those tiny threads.

If by ULS you mean the CK6x-ULS series, those are the latest capsules for
those classic systems mentioned above. Lower self-noise and distortion
than the Blue Line. For some reason, they don't seem to have caught on in
production work... or maybe that's what started this thread.

If by ULS you mean the C414-ULS, it's a large diaphragm multi-pattern
studio mic, externally-polarized condenser. Many people consider it one of
the most accurate workhorse mics for voice.

I use the CK 94 as the sides in my MS rig with a Schoeps 41 for the Mids.
This works quite well. Initially I went this route just to get an
inexpesenive system up and running and play with the stereo image. Never
really felt the urge to change it.

Recently used the Blue Lines with the short shotgun capsule in a medium sized
room with HVAC that was untouchable and the client was very complimentary about
the sound quality and how the even the softest voices cut through. I was very
happy, of course, YMMV.

When I have any problems with my loved MKH416, I use a C451B with a
CK1 shotgun capsule. Its 12V power so its a bit more trouble
(interesting the CK8 nad other non-shotgun capsules work on 48V) and
its a bit longer than normal shotguns cause of the modular design
(making fitting in windshileds and softies harder) I still like the
sound. One problem is, its very sensitive to humidity and rain, and I
was told to handle it with extra care at its not as durable as
Sennheisers.

But I still think that 416s are better than the newer Sennheiser short
shotguns than the ME and MKE series... not to speak about the long
guns..
